I have to have mediocre sex with Governor Swann? Boy, I tell you .. my luck with men.

And my thoughts on Superman. Which I just saw at the last showing and didn't get out till 1:20am. My friend and I were the only ones in the theater. Baby.

All right, I have to be honest here. There were three main things I enjoyed about this movie. One: Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Two: Kitty because she's great (yay Parker Posey). And three: James Marsden who is TEH COOL.

First a little James Marsden rant. Why, James Marsden, are you always the lover who will not win? I think you could very easily win in many situations. I feel bad that poor Richard White (like Cyclops before him) is having to compete with an outer force. Superman. Wolverine (though I ♥ Wolverine). And I hear James is going to be in some movie with Patrick Dempsey where he also is going to lose his girl to him. Geez. Why, with such charisma and talent, must you be the down-and-out lover seemingly always?

And a little Kevin Spacey rave! Lex Luthor, you visionary man. I couldn't help but love all his plottin-and-a'schemin' that at times made little sense. I admire him for just concoting a hair-brained scheme and giving it everything he had despite it's obvious, er, flaws. Just plunging in headfirst. I love how cynical and sarcastic he was. I love his opera music. I love his rag-tag band of goons. I love his wigs. I love that he conned some poor old biddie out of everything and finished her signature with no sweat off his back.

So I basically spent the whole of the movie rooting on Richard White and Lex Luthor. And I don't know if that's exactly what I was supposed to do.

See, I hate Lois Lane. I can't explain it. I just have never understood the appeal of her character. She is so darn incompetent. I swear she kept forgetting she had a kid. She kept, maybe slightly unconciously, toying with Richard's and Clark's affections. She just makes me mad. She isn't a strong person and she's so ... GAAH! I thought my problem was mainly with Margot Kidder, but apparently it also extends to Kate Bosworth and anyone who takes on her role. Seriously.

As for Brandon Routh: he was okay. He wasn't captivating, but he didn't suck. Personally I was more interested in a Superman/Kitty pairing. As weird as that is! The only couple-ish moment I got into was seeing Kitty get emotional watching Lex's thugs beat up Superman. I was like, "Hmmm." And also her obvious delight when he saved her from the car. Good times. But obviously he didn't quite jive with me to the point of me rooting mostly for him and not the other guys.

Maybe my problem is the whole Superman idea. I know Clark Kent is supposed to be "the mask" which makes him different from other superheroes, but besides the bumbling and not getting Lois I just don't find him quite as sympathetic as the others. He is too invincible, IMO. Too powerful. Too together. I mean, he can turn back time for crying out loud. Death doesn't have to happen. Yes, there's the Kryptonite and the need of the sun. But still! I guess I just find Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne and the X-Men posse easier to root for because they struggle. Demons! Humanity! Poverty! Darkness! Despair! Prejudice! Rejection! Blah blah blah.

Yeah, I'm weird. Sorry to those of you who really loved it. :)

Superman's weaknesses aren't his own creations. His weaknesses are in the people that he loves. He's doomed to unsatisfaction for the entirety of his existence, unlike Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne, and the X-men. These people are all human or something like it. Superman is from another freakin' planet, which makes him very different.

I don't think that Superman is *better* than the other superheroes, but I think he's different in a way that makes him more intriguing to some people.

As for Lois, well, she's missing an entire weekend of her memory, remember? (sorry for the pun) She realises by the middle of the movie that she must have really spent the night with Superman during that block of time she can't remember, and she's entitled to be a bit out there. She's suspected for awhile, but she pushed it out of her mind because she trusts and loves Richard.

Yo, and I agree with you about James Marsden. He's sadly been cast as the "great guy that never gets the girl." The Notebook, X-men, he just can't win. I fear for his career as a typecast actor, but he's the one that accepted the job on this movie. At least Billy Zane wasn't hired for Richard. Guh! That would have SUCKED.

Superman/Kitty? Kitty's just like everyone else who has ever been rescued by Superman--"when can I get thrown into peril again so I can see him again?" It's the IDEA of Superman that is so cool, but once you "have him," what more is there? It's so superficial, I think. But, maybe Kitty's a little more sophisticated than we think.

Superman... he's so pretty to look at. Did you notice the difference in hairstyle between Routh and Reeve? The part in the hair is on opposite sides.

But, you have to admit, seeing a piano be thrown across the room by dear little Jason was really cool.

:D I knew I would get some rebuttal from you and that it would be intelligent and well-thought out. I was right! I honestly wanted to love it because I wanted to rave about it with everyone. But there's a reason they call me Doofus.

I guess I am a bit confused about Jason. Lois honestly does believe he is Richard's son? Okay. I'm trying to remember the other movies - it's been a long time. So they actually did imply that Superman/Lois did the deed ...

Yay! We agree about James Marsden. Maybe it's a running joke with him or something. Yes, I forgot about the Notebook too! Holy cow. And I'm with you about Billy Zane. Eugh.

In a sick way, I'm almost glad I didn't love it because reading your defense was so interesting. :D *hugs*

Superman trivia courtesy of my comic book freak boyfriend, TO THE RESCUE!!!

I think Kevin Spacey has been the best Lex Luthor of any Superman movie ever made. He was absolutely fantastic. Rutheless, but not overdone. Calm, cool, collected, and crazy. Smart and psychotic. Genius and madman. Everything Lex is supposed to be. But Emily, you don't root for the baddies! (Although I, too, see why you would...)

I like Lois Lane's character the way it was MEANT to be. Fiesty, clever, intelligent, sexy, appealing, and fearless. Kate Bosworth was none of those. Instead of fearless, she was weak. Instead of fiesty, she was bland. Instead of sexy, she was just cute. She was so blah. Unfortunately, no actress seems to be able to play Lois the way she was MEANT to be. Comic book Lois has never transcended on the screen well... Of course, if they offered ME the job... *sigh*

As for Brandon Routh. I felt he was "okay" playing Superman, but GREAT as clumsy, awkward, shy Clark Kent.

The whole Superman idea that you talked about has always been the main flaw with the comics, the series, and the movies. I think DC comics has just kind of "made up" for that by insisting that Clark is Superman's mask by being clumsy and awkward, so much so that no one would expect him to be Superman. DC knows it doesn't make sense, but Superman is too much of a legend to change now. If they put a mask on him now, Superman fans would have a riot and burn down movie theaters world wide. So yes, it's a mistake and it makes no sense but it's too old a mistake to correct now.

Manny always said that the Superman franchise's biggest let down is that he never lost a battle, he never cried. He's invincible to all but kryptonite. Manny prefers Spiderman for that very reason: he's vulnerable. He lost battles, he lost the girl more than once, he lost his powers. Superman is TOO perfect. But in Superman's defense, he's not human. Spiderman, Batman, all those others who aren't TOO powerful, TOO perfect, are human. Superman is Kryptonian.

That's my input :)

I know. I don't know why I'm rooting for the Bad Guy. I'm such a weirdo! But I couldn't help it. Lex's plan was just so awesome and crazy. *chuckles evilly*

They should totally have YOU play Lois. Couldn't agree more with that. My comicbook specialty is more Spider-man, so I really don't know Superman that well. Lois IS actually supposed to be .. cool? Wow. They fooled me. ;)

Superman is Kryptonian - this is true. This is true. He is not human. All right, chalk yourself up some big points. I guess since I'm human, it's hard to relate with it. It's difficult to see Superman all flawless and powerful always. I mean, he gets kicked around a bit but it never lasts. It's too brief. And I agree with Manny (smart boyfriend you have!) that because Superman never loses, it gets old. What is left that will leave you hanging? Or scared? It's that fear for the hero that keeps you tuning back in, rooting for them and hoping they win.

Fantastic input. It makes me think (and I need to do that more).

OH SNAP! (Ahhh, if only it were true, luv...) And thanks :) Manny has taught me so much about comics and superheroes. His favorite is Spidey, but he did stress some points about Superman: whether or not he's invincible and always wins, he's classic. He's a pop culture icon and you gotta love him for that. And Manny was also really happy that Superman Returns is the most to-the-comic-story accurate super hero movie ever made (85%, he says!)

^^

What is it with everyone else having mind-boggling sex with Jack while I'm off dinking around with Governor Swann. UGH. ;)

*nod* Superman is an icon, no matter how you look at it. I do agree. And it's always nice when they do honor the comics while doing the movies. I will be interested to see what they do with Spider-man III since it seems they are going to incorporate a whole bunch of comic-y goodness (though it will be different, I'm sure).
